ABOUT US

EMMA (Ethnic Minority Memorabilia Association) is a 501c3 organization located in Washington, Arkansas. It is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich culture and history of ethnic minorities, with a specific focus on African-American history.EMMA was founded in 1982 by the late Mildred Johnson Smith, an educator and superintendent in the local Arkansas school system. Mildred was a trailblazer in her own right, with a passion for educating people about the invaluable contributions of people of color to Southwest Arkansas. She recognized the need for the dissemination of accurate and comprehensive information about the diverse cultural heritage of the region.One of the primary goals of EMMA is to educate the public about the rich history and achievements of African Americans. Through exhibits, educational programs, and guided tours, the museum strives to shed light on the contributions of African-Americans in various aspects of society, including politics, science, art, and music.In addition to fostering a deeper understanding of African American history, EMMA also aims to enhance the feeling of self-worth and pride of individuals within the African American community. By showcasing the achievements and contributions of their ancestors, the museum aims to instill a sense of pride and empowerment among visitors.EMMA, a non-profit organization in Washington, Arkansas, acknowledges the importance of interpreting the Black History that has shaped the region. In recognition of this, EMMA serves as a valuable resource for the community by providing a deeper understanding of the experiences and contributions of African Americans in the area. Through extensive research and engagement with the community, EMMA strives to showcase the rich and diverse history of African Americans in Washington, Arkansas. The museum serves as an educational platform, offering historical context and insightful perspectives on the significant and often overlooked role of African Americans in the region's development. As a not-for-profit organization, EMMA relies on the support of volunteers, donors, and the community to continue its mission of celebrating and preserving Black History.
